How Your Mittens are Made

Built in 1913, our Stoll knitting machine has been producing knit material for over 100 years! The machine produces a flat piece of fabric with very even, meticulous rows of stitches. Once knitted, the fabric sheet is washed in hot water and dried to pre-shrink the material.

The next step is to fold the sheet into many layers and place it on an airbed table which allows the fabric to move easily. The mitten templates are placed on the fabric and the worker uses a band saw to cut out the mitten fronts, backs, and thumbs.

The final step is to sew the outer mitten, the fleece liner, and the ribbed cuff together to create the final product – Your mitten!
